Stira e Sukha Sensorial installation 2005 - Aliki Polydor

« stira e sukha » : "il piacere nella disciplina" tradotto dal sanscrito
Installazione sensoriale - Aliki Polydor
 All Rights Reserved 2005
ex-Macello Verona

Aliki Polydor turns Betty Boop into Leddy Boop | 2008

Concept and project Aliki Polydor september 2008 All Rights Reserved
A transparent coffin  made to measure to accomodate our Betty Boop.
Betty Boop is  wearing black  gloves with LEDs inserted at the tip of each finger. When she rises out of the coffin, the lights are programmed to switch on.

Background music Max Raabe and his Palast Orchestra.

With the arrival of each new visitor Betty Boop rises out of the coffin and begins to dance to Max Raabe's songs. Betty Boop comes out of the coffin, her LED-lit fingers switched on, dances, then goes back to sleep again switching off the light on her fingertips. Meanwhile a projection of betty boop's cartoons is made to the sound of Cab Calloway's voice in the background.
The entire setting is lit with power-LED lighting at 6500K and dimmed to adapt to the scenography.

Check this out.

"Stira and Sukha©2005-2016 Aliki Polydor installation refers to the pleasure of practicing a discipline. It is in sanscrit and sustains that in practicing any discipline or art no matter how arduous, one can reach great satisfaction. One pre-requisite for this ultimate satisfaction is the continuity and regularity in practicing that discipline.

My “take it or leave it”  LED lighting interactive project, could be best translated as "immediatezza o rinuncia”©2006

An overview
Today the senses are weakened and lacerated because technology and progress make all processes dramatically explicit. Senses are neutralized and lose their capacity to discriminate. We need to reflect on that…and maybe work on ourselves.
I designed and set up this interactive polisensorial installation in a church. Upon entering the church, you are immersed immediately and find yourself viewing a court metrage by Ruben Garbellini called Breve Sogno projected onto the Choir. The reason why I decided to project the film on the crucifix, was because I meant to involve "Christ" in our worldly tormented life as well as in the life of the protagonists in the film. I specifically chose John Adams'“The Grand Pianola Music” as the background soundtrack, with its syncopated rhythm to emphasise the dramatic context of our lives today, and that of the film's protagonists, in particular. I purposely added a pink filter on the film projection in order to focus on life's duality "la vie en rose" on the one hand, and the contrasting theme of the plot which is sad. My intention was to emphasise that, despite life’s solicitation, every individual can dream of some "vie en rose"! With the film's soundtrack muted, the spectator is directly exposed to the feature film's dramatic tone which is distinctly attenuated by the pink filter simulating “la vie en rose”.
Another visual impact comes immediately from the soft white wall that surrounds the choir thus creating an added sense of privacy and at the same time records the feeling of a confessional zone. I wanted to draw attention on that instant of expectation, meditation that precedes confession. A momentous "alone with oneself and one’s thoughts". The intention was to provoke moments of reflection on the part of the visitor without any kind of technological interference.
The atmosphere of the church left semi-dark emphasizing the mesopic aspect, with dimmed LED lighting. The visitor proceeds to find out what is behind the white (RGB LED lit) wall. There, behind that wall, an experience awaits to be lived.

The moment the visitor sets foot on the purposely-designed platform, the LED lights embedded in the platform light up and trigger a dialogue on the provided headphones.
In this dialogue a man and a woman simulate intimacy although they have only just met... At the end of their three-minute conversation we find out that they have met each other only twenty minutes ago… –Aliki Polydor | copyright 2006

Every time a new participant steps on that platform, all the senses awaken: from the visual (dimmed LED-lights), olfactory (real clover scent diffused through a remote controlled compressed air system), to the tactile and auditory (dialogue between the man and the woman)In this sensorium- - the consumed senses-represented by five straps of skin-like textures—mask partially the view of the real world of relationships, that of the protagonists in the film of which the spectator hears the authentic dialogue this time while watching the same extracts privately within the soft wall confessional, and so it goes…

Aliki Polydor | Sensorial LED light installation 2006 - "Take it or leave it" - Church of San pietro in Archivolto - Piazza Duomo - Verona

A polisensorial interactive experience

To be wrapped up in a film, to fall into it with the help of poly-sensorial, tactile, and olfactory stimuli, as well as those of sound and sight: this is the effect of the installation Take It or Leave It by Aliki Polydor, a designer and an artist with a complex cultural background - basically Iranian and Russian but with French, English, and North American influences. The installation was inaugurated on Friday November 3rd, with a presentation by Marco Ongaro, and will be open to the public from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. until Sunday in the Church of San Pietro in Archivolto, next door to the Cathedral, Piazza Duomo in Verona.
Aliki, who has lived in Verona for some time now, had already made her mark with gripping environments full of colour, lights, and odours in which we could enjoy particularly inventive and intense experiences. Her language has even become more complex and sophisticated, more abstract, full of temporal shifts and able to capture profoundly whoever is willing to experience what the artist offers.Take It or Leave©2006 -2016 by Aliki Polydor alludes to the dichotomy between immediacy, which is continually forced on us by a society used to having everything automated or remote-controlled, and the ever rarer ability to say no. Rejection/Renunciation has a meaning that is both positive and negative Aliki explains:
Today, we always want to be satisfied straight away, immediately: something that is at times impossible. Our senses are violated, they suffer and are in pieces; we no longer know how to distinguish, discern, discriminate and give ourselves the time to choose, accept, or even to say no. The force of renunciation vanishes and, as a result, we are weakened.
And this is why Aliki asks us to take a minute on her LED-illuminated platform and undergo, individually, immersed in the flow of John Adams’ Grand Pianola Music, an experience that starts from our bare feet to arrive at our nose, our eyes, (the sequence of images derive from a short film by Ruben Garbellini), our ears - not forgetting the fundamental tactile experience with the caressing lacerated soft resin hanging in front of the platform- and finally, our heart.

Aliki Polydor 2006

The light installation in the castle of Rivoli Forte Wohlgemuth “Zafferano o spezie…”, together with the LED light sculpture “ZAFF”, hymns those emotions tied to the senses of  vision, taste and smell. Spices give their contribution to the taste of elements and also to the taste of life, by making life more intense with a pinch of extra feeling, intensifying the pleasures of taste and smell but also of vision
As with all spices, saffron yellow has, as a result of its attributes, an important impact on our senses because it influences our being with further repercussions on our soul, on our moods. The plant itself, with all its qualities, imparts well-being, as is often mentioned by Omar Khayyam in poems that often deal with hedonism, Epicureanism…
Strangely enough all colours are to be found in spices…
There is a colour for each spice, for each pleasure. Orange, red, yellow, green…
There is an emotion for every thing in life…

Aliki Polydor 2005 | sensorial lighting installation | Zafferano o spezie | Castello di Rivoli

The installation “Zafferano o spezie…“ at the castello di Rivoli - Forte Wohlgemuth with 3 technologically innovative SSL light sculptures of which “zaff”, being the most important one, offers a distinct message : that of enhancing emotions linked to the pleasure of the senses, whether gustatory or olfactory.

To Aliki, spices contribute to the flavor of the elements but also to the flavor of life, making it even more intense with the addition of subtle hints to emotions intensifying the olfactory pleasure and taste. When entering a completely dark space guided by the cardamome scent that spreads in the environment, the colored light and the adequate colour temperature of the white light, very close to daylight, the light sculpture "zaff" with its soft shapes strongly affects the senses of the visitor.

The dominant color chosen by Aliki is saffron yellow. Saffron, like all the other spices leads us with its benefits to an important impact on our senses. Spices affect our beings with notable repercussions on our mind and soul. Omar Khayyam in his poetry mentions it in the context of hedonism and Epicureanism... Saffron draws us to a sense of wellbeing.

Strangely all colors are found in spices ... There is a color for each spice, for every pleasure. Orange, red, yellow, green ... and the entire installation is further emphasised with Aliki's LED lighting design.

There is a thrill for all things in life says Aliki Polydor, even simple small things like spice.all rights reserved © 2004

LED light polisensorial installation "Saffron or spices" | Aliki Polydor

Aliki Polydor's polisensorial lighting installation is, then, to be seen in the context of other contemporary art inquiries even though it is based on specific elements of her own sensitivity and personal style: adding LED-lighting she has creates an all-embracing quality. She does so with the lightest touch and in a clear and allusive manner. This camera obscura has a clearly feminine aspect even when considered, as is inevitable, at a symbolic level. Whoever crosses its threshold will be immersed in a small paradise of senses(smell, visual, tactile) where it is possible to distance oneself and be amazed by the simplest things.
Saffron or spices” implies synaesthetic perception from the outset: usually we associate spices with a scent or a flavour rather than a colour but Aliki works, as is her practice, by avoiding the obvious, shuffling the cards, and returning to those times when colours were linked to vegetable and mineral elements. Her cultural background is a mixture of Eastern and Western elements that are by now impossible to untangle. Her father was Greek, her mother Russian, she grew up in Iran, was educated in schools in New York, England and France, moved to Paris and finally arrived in Verona. Aliki breathes colour and feels flavours, she plays with the forces of natural elements and with visual, tactile, and acoustic perception delivers her inventiveness.

Looking back, the next step seems to have been almost obligatory: the spices add the missing sense of smell. Indeed, in this series of works, the spices have become the starting point for Aliki’s luminous and generous forms, and each one has been chosen for the emotive potential that Eastern tradition has attributed to it, from pepper in all its shades of black, green, red, and white, to saffron, cardamom, and cumin. But Aliki's creativity reaches its maximum in the objects that were invented as a result of all this. The three-dimensional flower-object, a creation of hand-shaped coloured resin sustained by stainless steel piano wires illuminated with LEDs, enters both as a functional and a symbolic element, pigments and spices being its primary components. These objects might find their place in the home as part of the furnishing, but also as works in themselves, as examples of creativity. On this occasion Aliki's LED-lit "Zaff" is placed in such a way as to underline a synaesthetic quality. This is a quality that has ancient roots and which, during the twentieth century, was useful in finding points of contact above all between sound and colour, but also by building invisible bridges between feeling, sight, and hearing, as is attested to by the work of such artists as Laszlo Moholy Nagy, Luigi Veronesi, Vassily Kandinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Marcel Duchamp, and Bruno Munari. It is not by chance that one of the installations by Aliki has been bought by the Palazzo Forti Modern Art Gallery in Verona in order to be placed in a contemporary pedagogical context.
Recently the tendency of artists to search for an all-embracing involvement of the senses has become more insistent. A 1987 installation by James Turrell was shown in 2001 in an exhibition at the Gran Guardia building in Verona titled “The Perception of Space” (Minimal Art from the New York Panza Collection), curated by G. Cortenova and G. Panza di Biumo. Here the viewer was obliged to lose himself in darkness in order to discover surprising perceptive qualities, from sight to feeling, as a result of being deceived by the extension of space and the kind of material that enveloped him. More in harmony with Aliki's ideas was the room in the Corderie dell'Arsenale at the 2001 Venice Biennale which Ernesto Neto filled with disturbing transparent bags hanging from the ceiling. These made an intense impression by their physically perceptible scent, above all that of mushrooms suspended upside-down. This installation was also chosen by the Merce Cunningham dance company as the ideal scenery for exalting the language of bodies and sounds–in this case– scents.

"Zafferano o spezie" | LED sensorial installation 2005 | Aliki Polydor

Aliki's works in resin are extremely luminous with their orange conveying energy and fragrance, seducing the senses. In this LED lighting installation of this Iranian-born designer and artist, we find all the fascination, light, and magic of the East. It is not by chance that her installation reveals through LED lighting a meeting of colour, spice;  a combination that becomes illumination, sagacity, devotion, and well-being. In these rooms Aliki Polydor narrates and reveals the world, an itinerary that cannot ignore the meeting of different cultures.
"Aliki breathes colour and feels flavours and scents, she plays with the forces of natural elements and with visual, tactile, and olfactory perception in her joyful approach to artistic invention and creation."
These are the words of Camilla Bertoni in her telling presentation essay of the show. She also underlines the synaesthetic quality of the works and mentions various twentieth century artists who searched for points of contact between sound and colour,
"by building invisible bridges between feeling, sight, and hearing, as is attested to by the work of such artists as Laszlo Moholy Nagy, Luigi Veronesi, Vassily Kandinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Marcel Duchamp, and Bruno Munari".
Such interests have taken on even greater significance in some of her recent works.
Aliki uses saffron, with its intense yellow both an aphrodisiac and a cleanser;pepper in all its varieties of red, black, green, and white, or cardamom and cumin. These are spices that give a scent to the flower-light sculptures with LED lighting called “ZAFF”. A cristalized rug in resin, a "Road to the East" leads us into the dark room.We are drawn into Aliki's world, into her intimate room, a world consisting of persian olfactory memories, of spices, but also of flowers in soft, coloured resin. This is a camera obscura, a place overflowing with metaphors for life.
The climactic point of this sensorial/olfactory installation , this "inside" which is a closed container in wall to wall black plastic, there bloom those LED-lit flowers of which there were already traces earlier in her career. These are highly metaphoric images, resin sculptures that also evoke the intimate meeting of the sexes, alluding to the seed that generates life, to fecundation. A functional led -light inside the flower illuminates it and warms both the work and the surrounding environment increasing the scents of clover, cardamome and coriander even further. Here the synaesthetic aspect is underlined in a strong and purposeful way: there is a great sensuality enclosed in this camera obscura, one that is transformed into a paradise of the senses.
"Saffron or spices.." informs us that Aliki loves to convey the spice of life. She experiences emotions with great intensity and transmits them throught light to her art. In order to donate them.
